L2 Demotivation in Online Classes during COVID-19: From an Activity Theory Perspective

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate an L2 learner’s motivation during his involvement in language learning. Specifically, it sought conceptualize the (de)motives that might have impact on participant’s learning process and reconceptualize, sense, above referring Activity Theory (AT). To end, attempted examine whether there were any changes within framework AT. scrutiny data revealed stemming from COVID-19 pandemic had a negative influence Ahmet’s process. Although he relatively motivated as started learner, new adapt amidst outbreak externally affected experiences, leading demotivation. present paper argues how change can be captured by Engeström’s (1999, 2009) triangle model. Further discussions andimplications are provided study.
